Are You A Palabraphile?

Monday, October 1st, 2007

Well, are you?

Of course you are, if you are a “lover of words.”

As a short story writer, I must always be aware of “word count” and use just the right word to convey emotion, action or description. Word economy is especially important to the short story writer, who does not have the luxury of a novel- length piece, but must bring home the bacon in something around 2000 words or so, sometimes much less.

These miniature masterpieces found at LongShortStories are crafted to elicit joy, sorrow, fear, wonder … all the range of emotions welling up from the human condition.

People ask … Wayne, what genre do you write? I have to laugh and reply that I try to create stories that defy ordinary genre strictures. While I do respect time-honored genre writing, my subscribers are depending on me to give them something really unique, something they haven’t seen before, something that touches them in a way undefinable as yet.

So, all you palabraphiles out there, starving for great short fiction, welcome home! The wordsmith is busy at his anvil, crafting objets d’art, some as elegant as spiderwebs, others as Spartan as minimalist mental landscapes. Still others, impacting like a karate blow to the solar plexus.
